I bet those fans who did the Cubs-Bears version of the Red Line Doubleheader on Sunday are pleased with their decision. And if you didn’t get that opportunity, then I hope you can do it next year (if the schedule-making gods allow for it).
The Chicago Bears beat the Buffalo Bills 38-0 in their Sunday night preseason showdown. If you missed any of last night’s action, I strongly recommend reading the game recap, Patrick’s nightcap, and Matt’s grades for starters. Some one-stop shopping for you at the top of BN Bears Bullets. Quarterback Caleb Williams was impressive in his debut operating in Head Coach Ben Johnson’s offense. All three of the Bears’ quarterbacks were impressive in their own ways. But Williams opened with a 92-yard scoring drive in which he completed 5 of 6 passes, threw for 97 yards, and tossed a touchdown. I had a bad feeling after Tyler Scott’s opening kickoff mishap, so it was nice to see the Bears bounce back by escaping the shadow of their own goal posts with some strong passing by QB1. The Athletic’s excerpt on the Bears’ preseason performance in Week 2 is headlined by Caleb Williams’ showing: “He was facing Buffalo’s backups but Williams looked sharp, going 5 for 6 on Chicago’s opening drive for 97 yards and a touchdown. “Caleb made a couple big-time throws, in my opinion, to keep that drive going,” first-year coach Ben Johnson said.” Because Case Keenum was out with an injury, Tyson Bagent took the lion’s share of snaps for the backup QBs — and made the most of his opportunity. Bagent went 13-for-22, threw for 196 yards, a touchdown, and a 103.6 passer rating. The third-year quarterback might have solidified his standing as Caleb’s backup. Give Bagent credit for being pushed by a veteran in each of the last two offseasons, only to push back harder with his play en route to gaining full control of the QB2 gig. Some galaxy-brained thinking: Could Keenum’s presence as a veteran quarterback allow the Bears to dangle Bagent in a trade? No matter what happens at the backup quarterback spot, I can’t shake the feeling that the more Bagent performs in this offense, the better his chances are of getting an opportunity to compete for a starting job elsewhere. And if that is how the cookie crumbles, then we should consider it a developmental win and hope that this team has more of them in the future. This Ben Johnson quote about Caleb Williams (via the Tribune’s Brad Biggs) has me feeling good about the future:“He’s really been locked in,” Johnson said. “Anytime you’re a young player, there’s usually a couple of steps forward and one step back. And that’s really been the story of this training camp. He and I have been really open and honest about it as we’ve gone through. And he’s had some really good practices, and he’s had a couple where it’s not good enough.
“I thought the three days of practice we had this week and this game were the most he’s stacked up good days in a row right now. The challenge is going to be to keep pushing that direction.”
It’s all about stacking up the good days, and building on them. I loved getting Rookie Colston Loveland and veteran Cole Kmet involved early, but it was also notable that Joel Wilson was getting throws his way throughout the game. It makes me think that there are enough balls to go around for Loveland and Kmet when the regular season opens in September. I like Ian Wheeler’s chances of making the Week 1 roster more now than I did when the preseason started. With injuries keeping Roschon Johnson and Travis Homer on the sideline, Wheeler making the most of his opportunities during the exhibition season could help him slide onto the roster. Last year’s “Hard Knocks” fan favorite seems to be loved by this front office, so I assume he will get every chance possible to stick around.Second of the day for @IanWheeler_26: FOX pic.twitter.com/hs9hVLAbjP

Some love for the Bears defense via the Sun-Times, whose game story drives home how well that group played against the Bills. And to think, the best could still be on the horizon. “It’s just camp right now, and we have a long season ahead of us,” defensive end Montez Sweat said. “but I like the competitive edge that we’re playing with. It’s transferring over. We’re playing physical ball.” The folks at Awful Announcing have a roundup of the response to FOX’s new NFL scorebug. I spent too much time around copy editors, page designers, and graphic designers to say that I like the scorebug or think it looks good. However, I will say I like it marginally better than what we saw during Super Bowl LIX. My only piece of advice here is that the powers that be at FOX should do simple better (as World Series-winning Cubs manager Joe Maddon once said). And the sooner they do that, the better the product will be.
