Because August is a slow, quiet month for hockey news and the Blackhawks are celebrating their Centennial Season this coming year, it’s time for us to rank the greatest players in the 100-year history of the franchise.
No, you won’t find Connor Bedard on our list. But there will be representation from across all generations of Blackhawks history.
We’ll start today with the honorable mentions and the guys who made the list between Nos. 21-25. It was incredibly hard to find leave some guys out of the top 25. With each name you’ll find individual accolades accomplished while with the Blackhawks and their career numbers with the franchise.
Honorable Mention (in no specific order):
Al Secord Patrick Sharp Niklas Hjalmarsson Bob Murray Pat Stapleton Pit Martin Eric Nesterenko Mush March Cliff Koroll Chico Maki Bill Hay21. Keith Magnuson, RHD
Number 3 RetiredCaptain (1976-79)2-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 589 games, 14 goals, 125 assists, 139 points, 1,440 PIM
“Maggie” didn’t put up glamorous numbers during his Blackhawks career. Well, except in the penalty minutes category. But he was the face of the franchise, a ferocious leader who stood up for his teammates. Magnuson and Koroll founded the Blackhawks Alumni Association and did more work to help former Blackhawks and to grow the game of hockey in Illinois than many realize. His number was posthumously co-retired with Pierre Pilote on Nov. 12, 2008.
22. Corey Crawford, G
2-time Stanley Cup Champion (2013, 2015)2010-11 All-Rookie Team2-time Jennings Trophy winner (2012-13, 2014-15)2-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 488 games (473 starts), 260-162-53, .918 save pct, 2.45 GAA
The Blackhawks selected Crawford in the second round (No. 52 overall) in the historic 2003 NHL Draft. Between him taking over as the primary goaltender in Chicago during the 2010-11 season and the end of the 2016-17 seasons, the only netminders in the NHL to win more regular-season games than Crawford (213) were Henrik Lundqvist (228) and Marc-André Fleury (227). And, if we’re honest, Crawford should have won the Conn Smythe in 2013; he had a .932 save percentage and 1.84 goals against average in 23 games in that postseason.
23. Dirk Graham, C
Captain (1988-95)1990-91 Selke TrophyBlackhawks career: 546 games, 152 goals, 191 assists, 343 points, 26 short-handed goals
On Jan. 4, 1988, the Blackhawks traded Curt Fraser to their hated rivals, the Minnesota North Stars, for Graham. He went on to serve as the captain of the Blackhawks and lead a team to the Stanley Cup Final. He won one Selke Trophy for the Blackhawks and holds the franchise record with 26 short-handed goals. Graham was a terrific leader and great defensive center. He is the first Black captain in NHL history.
24. Tony Amonte, RW
Captain (2000-02)5-time All-StarBlackhawks career: 627 games, 268 goals, 273 assists, 541 points, 20 short-handed goals
When the New York Rangers were finishing their roster to make a run at the Stanley Cup in 1994, they traded Amonte and Matt Oates to the Blackhawks for Stéphane Matteau and Brian Noonan. The deal worked out well for both; the Rangers won the Cup and Amonte spent nine fabulous seasons in Chicago. With his patented mullet flowing out the back of his bucket like Superman’s cape, Amonte put together six consecutive seasons of at least 30 goals — three of which saw him score at least 40. The other players in Blackhawks history with at least three 40+ goal seasons: Bobby Hull, Denis Savard, Steve Larmer, Al Secord and Jeremy Roenick.
25. Troy Murray, C
1985-86 Selke TrophyBlackhawks career: 688 games, 197 goals, 291 assists, 488 points, 30 game-winning goals
Murray is the original No. 19 who attended North Dakota and won a Selke Trophy for the Blackhawks. When Murray won the Selke Trophy in 1986, his 99 points were the most ever for a winner. Only two players (three seasons) have eclipsed the mark since: Sergei Federov (twice) and Doug Gilmour. The 45 goals he scored that year are the second-most in a Selke Trophy-winning season (Federov scored 56 in 1993-94). Originally drafted by the Blackhawks in the third round (57th overall) in 1980, Murray was a marvelous center who played a strong all-around game. Fans also love Troy for his work on WGN Radio, where he has partnered with John Wiedeman since the 2006-07 season.
