A 17-year-old high school student in the far western suburbs was shot and killed inside a home late Saturday night, law enforcement said.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., the Hampshire Police Department responded to High Avenue near South State Street regarding a shooting, police said in a Facebook post. Officers arrived at the scene and found a 17-year-old boy who had been shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities.
Police didn’t identify the teenager or provide specifics on what happened but said there was no ongoing threat to the community.
A family member identified the teenager as Deegan Kirschke, a Hampshire High School student who was a lifelong wrestler and motorsports enthusiast, to the Daily Herald newspaper.
Dr. Martina Smith, the superintendent of District 300 which includes Hampshire High School, released the following statement:
“On behalf of the entire District 300 community, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Deegan’s family and friends during this very difficult time,” Smith said. “Hampshire High School is committed to supporting students and staff as they navigate this loss, and counseling services are available to provide care and support to those in need.”
The St. Charles Wrestling Club said in a Facebook post, “The Saint Charles East wrestling family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former STE Club wrestler Deegan Kirschke. All of our thoughts and prayers are with Dennis and all of Deegan’s family during this very difficult time. We will provide any relevant public information as it becomes available.”
The incident was under investigation Hampshire police in conjunction with the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force.
