ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The mother of the 7-year-old boy, Hakeem Badgers, who was fatally struck by a U-Haul on July 4 last year, is continuing to face charges of negligent homicide. Cyonna Badger is being charged in connection with her son’s death, prompting community members to question the decision.
“How does bringing these charges against Cyonna, how does that, in the long run, help Cyonna, her children, her family or the community?” said Bob Werth, a local priest.
On Saturday, a rally was held at Maplewood Park to support Cyonna Badger. Community members voiced their concerns about the charges.
“We don’t want to add an additional burden to the system. Why would we add an additional burden to the system by charging this young lady, this mother, with something that she did not intentionally do,” said Phillip Hounshell of Rochester Bible Baptist Church.
Clay Harris of United & Healing mentioned that the assistant district attorney brought charges based on video evidence. “I’ve seen a video, too, and I understand why they would say they’re justified in bringing the charges,” Harris said.
Harris also called for compassion from the District Attorney’s office. “I don’t think charges should have been brought. It should have been more of a compassion it time frame and an understanding time frame on this young mother and a teaching moment,” Harris said.
The driver of the U-Haul involved in the accident is not facing any charges related to the death.
