ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jason Kubel has been inducted into the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Fame, joining the ranks of the team’s greats. Kubel played for the Red Wings in 2004, 2006, and 2011, with his standout season in 2004 earning him International Rookie of the Year honors.
“He had one of the most consistent seasons I can ever recall for any player,” said GM Dan Mason. “Josh Wetzel (Red Wings Play-by-Play Broadcaster) mentioned this to him last night, he never had a slump the whole season.”
In 2004, Kubel batted .343 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs across 90 games, making it one of the best individual Red Wings seasons of the 21st century.
“I’ve seen some very talented people,” said manager Matt LeCroy. “You take a 21-year-old kid, a high school draft pick, a 12th round pick I believe. The way he dominated each level that he played at.”
“It started with my first game in big league spring training,” Kubel said. “I hit a home run and never really slowed down from there.”
Kubel, known for his humility, was touched by the recognition.
“When Dan reached out I was almost probably in tears,” Kubel said.
On Friday night, Kubel was honored at Innovative Field, though those who know him best say he prefers to stay out of the spotlight.
“Kind of a quiet guy. Wasn’t a loud outgoing guy. But he just came to work every day and did his job and did it really, really well,” said Mason.
“Very quiet. Man of few words but he was an awesome teammate,” LeCroy said. “He came up with an older group of guys and he fit right in, the way he prepared, the way he competed, but more importantly the way he treated people.”
Kubel’s success on the field and adherence to the Golden Rule earned him a place in the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Fame.
