Tennessee coach Josh Heupel spoke with reporters on Friday morning following a scrimmage the Vols had this week.
McCoy, who suffered a torn ACL in an offseason workout last December, wasn’t able to participate in the scrimmage, Heupel said. However, McCoy is still making progress in his effort to return to the field.
“He’s continuing his rehab,” Heupel said. “I think you saw him out on the practice field with us a few days ago and he’s continuing on that journey.”
If healthy, McCoy would have entered this season as arguably the nation’s top cornerback and a potential first-round pick in next spring’s NFL Draft. However, the injury casts some doubt over a key position for the Vols’ defense.
Whether or not Tennessee is able to get McCoy back to full strength this year could have a big impact on if the Vols accomplish their goals or not. McCoy registered 4 interceptions and 9 pass deflections in 13 games last season.

The good news for Tennessee is it has some time before it will face a potentially-elite passing offense this season. Georgia will make the trip to Knoxville on Sept. 13 with a new-look wide receiver room that features Zachariah Branch and Noah Thomas.
But first, Tennessee will begin the 2025 season against Syracuse on Aug. 30.
