ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The murder case of a Rochester man, whose body was discovered in Cattaraugus County, saw a new development as suspect Ruben Ortiz appeared in court Friday. Ortiz, the brother of the victim’s longtime girlfriend, faced charges of murder and concealing a body after the Rochester Police Department amended its complaint.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported from Indiana Street, where police said Luis Leon was killed. Ortiz was seen entering court, but his lawyers quickly blocked the view of our cameras.
Investigators said Ortiz killed Leon at a house on Indiana Street and dumped his body near Route 17 in Cattaraugus County. Leon was reported missing Sunday and appeared to have been dead for several days.
Assistant District Attorney Perry Duckles said, “If there is an indictment that comes of this matter, and the matter is arraigned in county or supreme court, then perhaps more facts can be divulged at that point.”
Ortiz’s next court appearance will be in front of a Monroe County judge. Monroe County Court says that appearance will be scheduled after the grand jury rises.
Ortiz previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter in 1993. He was released to parole in 2009 and discharged in 2012. He is currently in Monroe County Jail.
