Truly incredible how the Cubs found new and exciting way to blunder that one away. The offense once again failing to show up is one thing, but Pete Crow-Armstrong inexplicably sliding five feet past second base on a clean and easy stolen base? When he would’ve been the tying run at second with nobody out in the 9th? On a day when he’d bounced back to have three hits after a protracted slump?
Gotta hand it to writers. Didn’t see that one coming.
A more standing scenario played out when the Cubs loaded the bases with nobody out in the 7th, and even had the best possible hitter coming to the plate in Matt Shaw. Thank goodness it was him, because his sac fly tied the game, and I’m not sure anyone else would’ve even done that. Naturally, no one else did.
You could give the Ankin Law “Making It Personal” Player of the Game honors to Colin Rea, because he, too, played his part in the standard story (i.e., good starting pitching that wound up not mattering at all).
