Popular grocery store in talks to take over former suburban Mariano's ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A new grocery store could soon takeover the former Mariano’s location in suburban Northfield, which shuttered in June after nine years — and many on the North Shore are already familiar with the name.

Sunset Foods, a locally-owned and popular grocery store with locations in Highland Park, Libertyville, Lake Forest, Long Grove and Northbrook; and Grand Food locations in Winnetka and Glencoe, has applied for a special-use permit to operate a grocery store at 1822 Willow Road. The grocer was revealed and met with applause at a Village of Northfield Plan and Zoning Commission Meeting Aug. 7.

Reports of the grocery store coming to the suburb began after a petition and request was filed with the commission, which listed as an “unnamed grocer” as a perspective tenant. While the petition didn’t name Sunset Foods as the grocer, it mentioned Sunset’s in-store, quick-dining concepts of Smokehouse, which serves brisket and smoked ribs, and BeriGood, which serves Acai Bowls.

According to the Village, Sunset is applying for the permit alongside SDGDCG Northfield LLC, which owns the property. Following an executed lease and approval by the board, the grocer would come to occupy the entire, 47,000 square-foot building and build an “out lot” for curbside pickup.

Sunset would also plan to renovate the interior of the building, with an opening timeline of either late 2026 or spring 2027, the petition said.

Several residents spoke in support of Sunset Foods opening in the former Mariano’s location. Others brought up concerns, including parking, hours of operation and onsite trucks.

“We’ve lived here for 25 years now, and so we’ve seen the Dominick’s and the Mariano’s transition and changing,” one resident said. Prior to Mariano’s opening in 2014, Dominick’s operated in the space from 1975 to 2013.

As the committee approved the special permit, more applause came.

“I think everyone will welcome your presence soon,” committee chairman Bill Vaselopulos said.

Sunset Foods and the land owners remain in lease negotiations, with the Village hopeful that an agreement would be reached, Village Manager Patrick Brennan said.

Several other suburban Mariano’s grocery stores were set to close in August, including locations in Bloomingdale, Northbrook/Glenview West and Buffalo Grove.
