CUBS LINEUP — Craig Counsell is wasting no time at all, and I love it! This afternoon, top Cubs prospect Owen Caissie will make his MLB debut (in his home country of Canada), as the Cubs try to steal a series from Max Scherzer and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
Michael Busch, 1B Ian Happ, LF Kyle Tucker, RF Carson Kelly, C Owen Caissie, DH Nico Hoerner, 2B Willi Castro, CF Dansby Swanson, SS Matt Shaw, 3BWeird group today, eh?
This afternoon, both Pete Crow-Armstrong and Seiya Suzuki are getting some rest. The latter of which is how Owen Caissie (DH) is getting into the Cubs lineup. That said, I wouldn’t count on that being a regular thing. In fact, regular starts may be pretty tough for Caissie to come by, especially as Willi Castro is already aggressively used as an alternate for Kyle Tucker, Ian Happ, and PCA (and also Seiya Suzuki), among others.
But, hey, Caissie is here (and from Canada), so you might as well rip the bandaid off and see what he’s got. Plus, this all has the makings of a great debut story.
Gonna be so cool when Owen Caissie hits his first career home run off of Max Scherzer in his home country of Canada during his MLB debut.
— Michael Cerami (@Michael_Cerami) August 14, 2025For what it’s worth, lefties (like Caissie) are hitting Scherzer a lot better than righties are this year, so it’s not a terrible idea to sub out a still-struggling Suzuki for this matchup, in particular.
As for PCA, I think his seat on the bench is more about the fact that he’s 3-42 with 15 strikeouts in August … might just need a break.
With Suzuki and PCA out, the top of the Cubs lineup looks a little different than usual. Ian Happ is batting second (eh…), Carson Kelly is cleaning up, and Caissie is batting fifth. That leaves the bottom of the order relatively “normal” for days when Castro plays.
Toronto Blue Jays Lineup:
Davis Schneider, LF Ernie Clement, 2B Vladimir Guerrero Jr., DH Bo Bichette, SS Ty Vance, 1B Addison Barger, 3B Myles Straw, CF Tyler Heineman, C Joey Loperfido, RFPitching Matchup:
Chicago Cubs: Matthew Boyd, LHP
Matthew Boyd bounced back from his really bad outing against the Brewers with seven scoreless, walkless innings against the Orioles at Wrigley Field. And that one came with eigth strikouts and only four walks, too. Really, really good stuff.
His most recent outing, however, was more middling, with the Cardinals scoring three runs on SEVEN hits over 5.0 innings of work, with just three strikeouts.
Ultimately, though, you’re just happy to see back-to-back walkless outings after his command was uncharacteristically out of sync in Milwaukee.
As for today’s matchup, the Blue Jays are still a very good offense vs left-handed pitching this season (111 wRC+), but they are slightly better against righties (115 wRC+). So that’s something, I guess.
Toronto Blue Jays: Max Scherzer, RHP
The Blue Jays signed Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5M deal over the offseason, but had to mostly wait to enjoy the fruits of that signing until June (Scherzer hit the IL on March 30 following his first start).
So Scherzer’s season didn’t really get going until June 25, and it started off pretty slowly with a few mediocre, short outings against the Guardians, Yankees, and Angels.
On July 11, Scherzer tosses his first quality start of the season, which is now something he’s also done three times in a row … against the Tigers, Royals, and Dodgers. So unfortunately, yeah, I don’t think you can look at his age (41) or his ERA (4.21) and expect him to stink this afternoon. He may not be the guy he once was, but it looks like Scherzer’s still got it.
