A historic South Pasadena home designed by Wrigley mansion architect G. Lawrence Stimson is on the market for $4.329 million.

Known as the Clarence Fleming House, this 1910 residence described in the listing as a “dramatic, cantilevered ‘Japanese-chalet’ style” spans 3,829-square-feet. It features five bedrooms and five bathrooms, and it boasts a vaulted-timber carriage house designed by Frederick Roehrig, architect of Pasadena’s landmark Castle Green.

The Fleming House sits on a nearly half-acre lot along Oaklawn Avenue, an early 20th century neighborhood marked by entrance gate portals designed by architect brothers Charles and Henry Greene in 1904.

Stimson, who lived on the street, designed residences for some of his wealthy neighbors, including Fleming, an early 20th-century lumber executive and financier.

Records show the current owners of the Fleming House paid $1.25 million for the property in November 2002. They have since updated and restored it.

Original features include light fixtures, ceiling beams, wainscoting, Peruvian mahogany paneling and doors, bird’s-eye maple floors and molded plaster ceilings.

A fireplace covered in tiles by the American Arts and Crafts-era Grueby Faience Company anchors the formal living room.

The butler’s pantry separates the dining room from the kitchen.

There are built-in bookcases in the library.

All of the bathrooms were recently renovated.

A new infinity pool serves as the centerpiece of the backyard, surrounded by mature trees.

Updates also include a new roof, EV charger, dual HVAC and sewer line.

The carriage house/garage can be converted into a future ADU.

Adjacent to the garage is a gym and a separate office space.

Ann Nader of Compass has the listing.

Stimson, who died in 1939 at 56, designed more than 1,000 homes in the Los Angeles area and primarily in Pasadena, where he helped shape its architectural landscape. The Italian Renaissance-style mansion he designed in 1906 and upon its completion in 1914 sold to William Wrigley Jr., the chewing gum magnate, is now the headquarters of the Tournament of Roses.

Roehrig, another prominent architect who died in 1948 at 90, also made significant contributions. His commissions included the McNally House in Altadena, a landmark Queen Anne-style mansion began in 1887 for mapmaking tycoon Andrew McNally that was destroyed by the Eaton fire.
