ROCHESTER, N.Y. – 16 people are without a home and 10 people are in the hospital after two fires broke out Tuesday afternoon in Rochester. Eight of those injured are firefighters.

The Rochester Fire Department says three of their firefighters sustained 1st and 2nd degree burns battling a four-alarm fire at a townhome on Dewey Avenue just after noon.

“Right now, I have three firefighter injuries and two civilian injuries,” said Chief Stefano Napolitano at the scene on Dewey Ave. “The firefighter injuries appear to be burns in nature. The civilian injuries happen to be more atmospheric conditions,” he said, referring to the heat and humidity.

Less than 30 minutes after getting the fire under control on Dewey Ave., RFD responded to a call on West Ave. at the Flower City Art Noire Collective, a summer art camp.

“This hasn’t been my year,” said Tonya Noel Stevens, co-owner of the art camp. “It’s been a rough time already. I really hope the community can come out and really turn out, support us to help us move forward in this. I’m so grateful that camp was canceled today. We were literally supposed to be having camp right now.”

On top of the damage, five other firefighters were taken to the hospital for minor injuries including burns, heat stress and two falls. RFD says a lot of those heat-related injuries come from Tuesday’s high heat and humidity.

“So what we’ll do is we’ll bring in additional resources to cover those firefighters, as well as covering the firefighters that really need to be a couple of hours of rehabilitation, to cool down and get their strength back,” said Chief Napolitano at the West Avenue scene. “It depends on what the level of heat exhaustion is. It’ll be determined by a medical provider that will tell us they need other cleared to return to work.”

Four refugee families were displaced by the fire on Dewey Avenue, one of them from the Congo. The Red Cross is helping them find a temporary place to regroup and rest.
