The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the formation of a tripartite working group—comprising Damascus, Amman, and Washington—to support the Syrian government’s efforts to consolidate the ceasefire in Suwayda province, southern Syria, and resolve the ongoing crisis there.
The announcement came during a meeting on Tuesday, August 12, between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi, and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Thomas Barrack.
According to a joint statement, the United States welcomed steps taken by the Syrian government, which included:
Conducting full investigations and holding accountable all perpetrators of crimes and violations in Suwayda province, along with readiness to cooperate with relevant United Nations bodies and involve them in the investigation process. Increasing the delivery of humanitarian aid to all areas in Suwayda and enhancing its flow, including cooperation with relevant UN agencies. Intensifying the work of service institutions to restore services disrupted by recent events in the province. Beginning the rehabilitation of areas damaged by the events. Welcoming international contributions to support these efforts and assisting the government in facilitating the return of displaced persons to their areas. Initiating community reconciliation processes in Suwayda and promoting civil peace. The statement stressed that Suwayda is an integral part of Syria, and that guaranteeing the rights, representation, and inclusion of its people in shaping Syria’s future is essential.
It noted that the meeting was a follow-up to talks held in Amman on July 19, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement between the Syrian government and local factions in Suwayda.

U.S.-Jordanian Mediation Efforts
On August 9, al-Quds al-Arabi quoted American and Syrian diplomatic sources as saying that the Jordanian capital was preparing to host a new round of negotiations between the Syrian government and representatives of the Druze community in Suwayda.
However, neither the Syrian Foreign Ministry nor the Jordanian news agency Petra mentioned the participation of any Druze representatives, as reported by al-Quds al-Arabi.
Following the latest events in Suwayda, the Syrian Ministry of Interior announced on July 19 the terms of the ceasefire agreement in the city, which came after negotiations between Syria’s transitional president Ahmad al-Sharaa and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with U.S. support and backing from Turkey, Jordan, and neighboring states.
Jordan played a role in consolidating the ceasefire, with Jordanian Prime Minister Ayman Safadi and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio meeting in Washington on July 26 to discuss the latest developments regarding the ceasefire in southern Syria, particularly in Suwayda.
The meeting came within the framework of U.S.-Jordanian-Syrian cooperation to stabilize the situation on the ground and maintain regional security.
Shifting Druze Leadership Stance
On August 9, Suwayda’s three senior Druze sheikhs issued statements declaring clear positions against the Damascus government. The move marked a shift by Sheikhs Yusuf al-Jarbou and Hammoud al-Hannawi from their previously moderate, conciliatory stance to align with the position of Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri.
Suwayda saw deadly events in mid-July, which killed at least 1,013 people, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.
Those involved in the violence included local factions in Suwayda, government forces, tribal fighters, and Bedouin groups, amid Israeli intervention against government forces.
