Alabama is expected to name Ty Simpson its starting quarterback for Week 1 of the 2025 season, according to a report.
That news was first reported by 247Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer on Monday evening. Simpson entered fall camp as the leader per head coach Kalen DeBoer and seemingly has separated from Austin Mack and Keelon Russell in the race for the starting gig.

Simpson is a former 5-star recruit who has served as a backup for several years at Alabama. He initially signed with the Crimson Tide back in the class of 2022, but has patiently waited for his turn behind quarterbacks like Jalen Milroe and Bryce Young.
Despite playing for Alabama for the last 3 seasons, Simpson has very little on-field experience entering the 2025 campaign. He’s 29-of-50 for 381 yards, 0 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in his college career. He does have 3 rushing touchdowns so far in his time at Alabama.
If he is ultimately named the starter, Simpson will have a tough test right off the bat as the Crimson Tide travel to face Florida State in Week 1. Kickoff for that game on Aug. 30 is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
