First Alert Weather In-Depth: Is this a hotter-than-average summer for Rochester? ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – If you work or spend time outdoors, you have likely noticed it is shaping up to be a hot summer in Rochester. Temperatures have climbed consistently, and all signs point to a season that could be testing our tolerance for heat.

But how do we measure just how hot a summer truly is? One commonly used metric is the number of days with high temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit or more. Historically, Rochester averages about 8 to 10 days per year at or above this threshold. So far in 2025, we have already recorded 10 such days and that is right at the seasonal average. And with several weeks of summer still ahead, that number could easily rise.

For perspective, the hottest summer on record in Rochester was in 1952, with a sweltering 32 days reaching 90 degrees or higher. That was during an era when air conditioning was a luxury, not the norm. Thankfully, we are not close to that extreme this year, but it is a reminder of what is possible.

Looking at the last decade, the number of 90 degree days has varied significantly year to year. The last time Rochester hit 10 such days was in 2020. Meanwhile, the summers of 2016 and 2018 saw more intense heat, with over 20 days above 90 degrees.

Comparing Rochester to other U.S. cities shows just how much location matters. As of now, Washington, D.C. has seen 26 days over 90°F. Further south, Atlanta, Georgia has tallied 32 days, while Louisville, Kentucky leads with 39. Dallas, Texas has endured 42 days of 90 degree heat.

Then there is Phoenix, Arizona which is truly in a class of its own. So far in 2025, the city has experienced 111 days at or above 90 degrees or above. Even more striking, 81 of those days reached triple digits. As locals often say, “It is a dry heat”.  But that does not make it any less extreme.

As the season continues, Rochester residents should stay alert to rising temperatures and take necessary precautions during outdoor activities. Summer is far from over!
