Some of the biggest debates in college football right now center around Jon Gruden and Jimbo Fisher. Each has recently expressed interest in coaching college football in the future.
Gruden has no experience as a college football head coach but has a decorated NFL career, including guiding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl title in 2002. Meanwhile, Fisher led Florida State to a national title in 2013 and most recently coached at Texas A&M from 2018-2023.
On SiriusXM College Sports Radio, Danny Kanell and Dusty Dvoracek weighed in on which coach they believe would hypothetically land a gig first.
Jon Gruden and Jimbo Fisher made their cases over the weekend why they want to be back in College Football. So will Gruden or Jimbo get back to the sidelines first?@DustyDvoracek & @dannykanell debate. pic.twitter.com/ZzPxBF11CY
— College Sports on SiriusXM (@SXMCollege) August 11, 2025Despite Fisher flaming out with the Aggies, Kanell is still going with him as the safer option.
“I would say Jimbo,” Kanell said. “[Gruden] comes with baggage. It wasn’t pretty what happened with the emails and stuff that was found out about him but anybody can get past that. But he also hasn’t been in college. Belichick hasn’t either. Actually, if Belichick does well, I think that helps Gruden. If he doesn’t, I think it hurts him.”
Dvoracek also is leaning towards Fisher but is highly intrigued by Gruden’s pedigree and personality carrying over at the college level.
“If he starts really putting it out there and he starts going after some of these jobs, I don’t think it’ll go unnoticed. I think he’ll get looks for sure…Say what you want but the guy is incredibly likable….When he brings quarterbacks in for his Gruden Camp, people tune in, when it was at ESPN or obviously now what he’s doing at Barstool Sports,” Dvoracek said. “…Oh by the way, he knows a lot about football. The guys that I knew that played for him in the NFL really liked him a lot. I would love to see him in college football.”
Gruden definitely is more alluring right now because he has no sample size in college. However, either coach would certainly be a splashy move and worth the risk.
