Trump name checks Oakland in National Guard D.C. announcement ...Middle East

(KRON) -- President Donald Trump singled Oakland out by name Monday in a speech announcing he would be deploying the National Guard in Washington D.C. and federalizing its police department. Speaking to reporters in the White House's James Brady Briefing Room Monday, Trump said he would be deploying the guard to the nation's capital after previously posting on social media that the city would be "LIBERATED."

Trump said he would be declaring a public safety emergency in Washington, which he compared to the capitals of Iraq, Brazil, and Colombia. The president said that U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi would be taking over the Washington metro police department.

The Republican president's announcement comes in the face of pushback from Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Bowser, a Democrat, has noted that violent crime in Washington has decreased since a rise in 2023.

"Any comparison to a war-torn country is hyperbolic and false," the mayor said.

Trump's additional comments about Oakland and Baltimore suggested he might be mulling extending National Guard deployment to other cities.

"We have other cites that are very bad. New York has a problem," Trump said. "And then you have of course, Baltimore and Oakland. We don't even mention that anymore. They're so far gone. We're not going to let it happen. We're not going to lose our cities over this, and this will go further. We're starting very strongly with DC and we're going to clean it up real quick, very quickly, as they say."

The president's comments on Oakland come immediately on the heels of a report from the Major Cities' Chiefs Association that shows violent crime has significantly decreased in Oakland. In the first six months of 2025 -- compared to 2024 -- homicides in Oakland were down 21%, assaults down 18%, robbery down 41%, and rape down 41%.

Only arson saw an increase, up 9% from the same period last year.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that the rule of Washington could be returned to federal authorities. Doing so would require a repeal of the Home Rule Act of 1973 in Congress, a step Trump said lawyers are examining. It could face steep pushback.
