What is a heatwave?

A heatwave is an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of an area at that time of year, according to the Met Office.

In the UK, a heatwave is declared when an area records a period of at least three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding a certain level.

This threshold varies by UK county, depending on average temperatures.

In London, temperatures must reach or exceed 28°C for three days in a row for there to be a heatwave, while in Yorkshire temperatures need to hit 25°C.

The heatwave threshold is met when a location records at least three consecutive days with maximum temperatures exceeding a designated value, according to the Met Office.
