Hour 951 of Josh Giddey Watch …
The 2025-26 NBA schedule has started to surface! Multiple sources have now leaked the upcoming opening night and Christmas Day slate. To little surprise, the Western Conference appears as though it will dominate primetime with two of the East’s top teams losing their best player for likely the entire season. Zero East teams will help usher in the NBA season in October, while only two will have a chance to play on arguably the league’s biggest day in December. What? A Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat Play-In rematch isn’t doing it for you, Adam Silver!? On the one hand, we can all admit that there is far more superstar talent on the Western side of the map. Luka, LeBron, Steph, Jimmy, KD, Shai, Wemby, AD, Coop, ANT, Jokic … the NBA would be foolish not to market those players heavily. On the other hand, it’s not as if the East is completely void of players who can draw an audience. Giannis Antetokounmpo remains on a very short list of the world’s top talent. Jalen Brunson and KAT suit up in one of the NBA’s largest markets. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavs to 64 wins last year! Add in young players like Cade Cunningham and Paolo Banchero, and the East probably deserves more respect than they are currently being given. As I do every year, I shall now remind all of you that the Bulls have not played on Christmas Day since the 2016-17 season. The Three Alphas were given the spotlight against the San Antonio Spurs, where they comfortably lost 119-100. LaMarcus Aldridge destroyed them with 33 points on 15-20 shooting from the field. Ah, the memories! © Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports Look, asking to play on Opening Night or Christmas Day is a lot. I am not going to blast the Chicago Bulls for missing that mark over the last handful of years. However, the fact that they do not feel anywhere close to being considered stings. Not only does it continue to speak to their underwhelming on-court results, but it speaks even more to their lack of true star talent. This simply isn’t a very marketable team right now. You’d think that if anything was going to inspire this franchise to be more aggressive in figuring things out, it would be that! Save us, Matas Buzelis. You’re our only hope! Drew Stevens from The Bigs presented a good question on the app formerly known as Twitter. He asked fans to rank five of the Bulls’ offseason moves: Drafting Noa Essengue, re-signing Tre Jones, trading Lonzo for Okoro, extending Billy Donovan, and bringing back the pinstripes. I think my answer goes … Tre Jones Essengue Pinstripes Billy Okoro All things considered, I think that Tre Jones’ contract could prove to be a massive win. Rarely do you sign someone with his court vision and feel for the game for a mere $8.0 million a year. Plus, the Bulls were able to slap a team option on the third season. There is a world where Jones quickly builds a reputation are one of the best backup distributors in the NBA. We could see him play a pivotal role in establishing this team’s offensive identity and developing the young players on this roster. Likewise, he could become another fascinating trade chip for this front office. The swing on Noa Essengue is something I also have to rank highly. Is there some overlap between him and Matas Buzelis? Sure. But, as far as I’m concerned, that’s not something this front office should worry about at this point in time. The Bulls need as much talent as they can get, and the draft lottery is all about taking a gamble on high-upside guys. Noa Essengue is exactly that. Jumping ahead to my last spot, I want to make clear that I believe there is a world where Isaac Okoro helps this team quite a bit. His defensive versatility will be a breath of fresh air at times. With that said, this front office’s refusal to prioritize any kind of draft capital in a trade is dumbfounding. One-for-one swaps happen so rarely in the NBA, but the Bulls continue to seek them out. And, in this one, they only hurt their financial flexibility further. Okoro may not be on some kind of massive deal, but his contract is guaranteed for the 2026-27 season. Ball’s was not. This front office has constantly talked about prioritizing clean books for 2026 since the Zach LaVine trade, so why did you immediately eat into it? Speaking of next summer, we now have an idea of how much Coby White wants to get paid. Spoiler Alert: It’s a lot! Defense wins championships! Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen were such a lethal defensive combo. I know it may sound crazy to say, but I am not sure this part of their on-court dominance is talked about enough. Pippen is at least rightfully viewed among the top perimeter defenders of all-time, but Jordan was right up there with him when he wanted to be! Some folks act like Jordan’s DPOY was just handed to him for being a sensation. That doesn’t just happen, especially in an era where defense/physicality was all the rage.Imagine trying to score on MJ, Pip & the 90's Bulls ? #NBADefenseWeek pic.twitter.com/n13S5LhBtP
