Blaze Alexander, Diamondbacks contribute to Rockies’ recent misery ...Middle East

PHOENIX — Key hits from Blaze Alexander and Corbin Carroll, along with a quality start from Zac Gallen, put the Colorado Rockies away in a 6-1 win for the Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Friday.

Arizona (55-61) piled onto the recent stretch of misery for Colorado, which has dropped five straight games by a combined score of 60-12.

Alexander doubled home three runs in the first inning with a rope into the left-field corner off Rockies starter Austin Gomber, and Alexander hit a solo shot to the opposite field in his next plate appearance.

Carroll blew it open with a 424-foot long ball that just stayed inside the right-field foul pole in the fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

The Rockies (30-85) have allowed five or more runs in 13 straight games.

Zac Gallen grinds through quality start

It took Gallen 24 pitches and a Lourdes Gurriel Jr. sliding catch the get through the first inning unscathed — not helped by a Gallen throwing error to start the game — and the Rockies drew blood with a run in the second.

Gallen did not allow a hit from innings 3-5, giving the Diamondbacks a chance to expand their lead.

He walked three batters and did not get much swing-and-miss (six), but the balls put in play were weakly hit (77.7 mph) and he managed to plow through six innings with the one earned run.

Gurriel helped out again with a running grab to end the sixth inning.

In two starts since the trade, Gallen has thrown 12 innings with three earned runs.

The Diamondbacks and Rockies had more in common coming into Friday’s game than the former would care for. Both teams entered Friday 3-7 over their last 10 games, 8-12 over their 20 and 11-19 over their last 30. The difference in those 30 games: Arizona’s run differential was -21, while Colorado’s was a putrid -95.

The Diamondbacks were not flawless on Friday with only six hits, but they made enough key defensive plays with some timely slug to make it a simple win. Arizona moved to 5-2 this year against Colorado.

Up next for Diamondbacks

Eduardo Rodriguez will take the mound for Arizona on Saturday against a Rockies team that is 4-27 this year against left-handed starters. Right-hander Bradley Blalock will pitch for Colorado.

Saturday is also Star Wars Day at Chase Field.

Catch the game at 5:10 p.m. MST on 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.
