(KRON) -- A section of Interstate 680 will be closed in the East Bay this weekend. Beginning Friday night at 10 p.m., the northbound lanes of I-680 in Fremont at Highway 238 will be fully closed to traffic.

Caltrans said the closure is necessary to make critical bridge and pavement repairs. The closure at the Mission Boulevard/Highway 238 junction will begin at 8 p.m. Friday night with a full highway closure going into effect two hours later.

The roadway is expected to reopen Monday morning at 5 a.m. when work on the project is complete.

During the closure, Caltrans is advising drivers to use Interstate 880 or regional routes.

Caltrans began work on the bridge deck project in April and has been closing only one direction of travel on the highway at a time, with a southbound closure that took place last month. The work involves heavy machinery and the resurfacing of the entire bridge deck and must be done without live traffic to ensure safety, according to the state agency.

During the closure, northbound traffic will be detoured onto the Highway 238 off-ramp and will continue on that roadway before making a right onto Niles Canyon Road/state Highway 84 and continuing before returning to northbound Highway 680.

After the major bridge and overlay work is done, Caltrans officials said additional work will continue during nighttime closures through next spring. More information about the closure can be found on the Caltrans website.
