“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” – Edmund Burke

“A generation which ignores history has no past and no future.” – Robert Heinlein

“To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child. For what is the worth of human life, unless it is woven into the life of our ancestors by the records of history?” – Cicero

“Study the past if you would define the future.” – Confucius

“The only thing new in the world is the history you do not know.” – Harry S. Truman

“Remember that all through history, there have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they seem invincible. But in the end, they always fall. Always.” – Mahatma Ghandi

“There is no better teacher than history in determining the future. There are answers worth billions of dollars in a $30 history book.” – Charlie Munger

“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.” – Winston Churchill

“History is a vast early warning system.” – Norman Cousins

“There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen.” – Vladimir Lenin

“It is an oft-stated cliche that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it – a cliche, yes, but a true one. A study of history allows one a certain perspective over the times in which they live. And while it does not provide predictive powers for the future, it does offer some insight into how things might go a little further down the line.

“… The past, as they say, is a different country. For those who cannot see different customs through travel can get a similar education by learning about the past and how different things were done then.

“In addition to studying history, it is important to learn from our own personal past. Forgiving is important – forgetting is not. Remembering and reflecting upon our own past is crucial for those who wish to make more of themselves. The past provides a wealth of knowledge about us if only we can face it fearlessly. We can see what works, what does not, and perhaps most importantly, how far we have come to get to where we are today.”

These quotes help us understand how important the history of the world and the history of our own lives are, as well as how we can best learn from both.

A perfect hug…

We have heard that hugs improve immunity and reduce stress, but in a carefully controlled lab at Carnegie Mellon University, researchers had more than 400 healthy volunteers be exposed to the common cold virus. Before that, researchers spent two weeks tracking whether participants had been hugged each day. The lead researcher, Sheldon Cohen, thought that physical touch might be one way that social support can protect from stress-induced illness. Findings suggest that hugging is also surprisingly effective in boosting the immune system.

In 2023, a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, more than 100 first-year college students who received more daily hugs from friends, roommates and family members reduced morning stress levels the following morning.

It is the duration of a hug that makes the biggest difference: Five to 10 seconds proved optimal.

Stacey Ross, a mental health specialist, witnessed amazing transformations when her clients with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and addiction received a gentle, comforting touch. She said, “It can remind their brain what if feels like to be safe and loved. For trauma survivors, the hug provides a pathway to healing bypassing the need to process painful memories through words alone.

Women’s Equality Day Proclaimed in Mendocino County…

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors adopted a proclamation recognizing August 26, 2025, as Women’s Equality Day, marking the 105th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote in the United States.

To celebrate this milestone, the public is invited to attend a community event on August 24, 2025, at the Kelley House lawn in Mendocino, recognizing Women’s Equality Day and the enduring legacy of the suffrage movement.

It took the women’s suffrage movement 72 years to gain the right to vote in the United States due to a combination of factors including strong opposition, internal divisions within the movement, and societal resistance to changing traditional gender roles.
