ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Child Care Council has opened a new clinic to address the mental health needs of children.
Kids and adolescents ages 3 to 18 can receive help managing anxiety, ADHD, and other challenges at the Child Care Council’s new outpatient clinic.
“It’s critical that we intervene at a young age to help children develop social emotional skills, have the ability to regulate their emotions, and have the ability to cope with adverse life events,” Christen Coco Guzman, the clinic director, said.
The Monroe County Youth Risk Behavior Survey Report from the 2023-2024 school year indicated a decrease in students reporting mental health struggles in 2023.
However, the report showed a significant number of girls, Black, Latino, and LGBTQ students are still affected by mental health challenges.
The clinic offers individual, family, and group therapy and medication management services.
“I grew up in Rochester, where this community is near and dear to my heart, and I think that there’s really something to be said about it takes a village to raise a child,” Guzman said. “I’m a mom myself, and I know how critical it is to have support.”
Guzman, a marriage and family therapist, said the clinic is working to create a multidisciplinary team. It already includes an art therapist, social workers, mental health counselors, and a nurse practitioner.
“We’re in a beautiful playroom that we’ve spent a lot of time getting ready to do play therapy with the kids,” Guzman said. “And so I think everyone’s just really excited to see more children and families come through our doors.”
