The past weekend brought news of a fatal shooting downtown, near a bar and lounge in the Gaslamp Quarter.

San Diego continues to claim its ranking as one of the safest big cities in America, and a recent city report cited a decline in murder cases in the last year.

When homicides do happen, most often they happen downtown, or in a few adjacent neighborhoods.
