FORT STEWART, Ga. (WSAV) — An active shooter has been confirmed at Fort Stewart, and an unknown number of victims are being taken to a local hospital, according to Maj. Charles Egan.
Lt. Col Angel Tomko, Division PIO, said the incident occurred in the 2nd Brigade area located off of Highway 144, about 43 miles southwest of Savannah.
The brigade, which is not located in the main Fort Stewart area, is currently on lockdown, as is the Wright Army Airfield roughly five miles away, per the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) Commander.
"Lockdown your facility immediately, stay inside, close and lock all windows and doors. Keep telephone lines open and report accountability to your leadership," FSHAA said on a Facebook post.
FSHAA confirmed through Facebook that Fort Stewart DoDEA schools are on lockdown as well. That includes Button Gwinnet Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary and Snelson Golden Middle School.
Appling County School System was also placed on a Level 1 lockdown, saying it was "closely monitoring the situation and remain in communication with local law enforcement." Appling County is roughly 50 miles from Fort Stewart.
Officials said there was no immediate threat to area schools.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart," Gov. Brian Kemp (R) said in a statement. "We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same."
Fort Stewart is the largest Army post east of the Mississippi River. It’s home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and family members.
