ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Many residents have been running sprinklers in recent days in an attempt to combat dry conditions, but results have been not as expected. Lawns remain crunchy and stressed, and unfortunately, this perception of dry weather is supported by the data.
Rainfall in the Rochester area has been significantly below average. While some communities to the south and east of Rochester did receive modest rainfall in recent weeks, the Rochester Airport recorded almost no measurable precipitation over the past seven days. Looking at July as a whole, the airport recorded more than a tenth of an inch of rain on only two occasions. This is an amount that falls far short of what is needed. Overall, the region ended the month nearly 50 percent below normal rainfall totals.
This dry spell follows a notably wet spring. April brought 117 percent of normal precipitation, while both May and June saw totals exceeding 170 percent of normal. In short, it has been a season of extremes with the proverbial “feast or famine” for precipitation.
Looking ahead to mid-August, the forecast does not offer much optimism. The News10NBC First Alert meteorologists see any return to wetter conditions to be unlikely, at least in the near term. In fact, temperatures are expected to rise, which will increase evaporation rates, and this further dry out your backyard.
As of now, Western New York is not officially in a drought, but the region is currently classified as “abnormally dry.” This designation reflects the growing concern and signals that conditions are trending in the wrong direction.
