Bulls Trade Rumors: Ayo Dosunmu Not Going Anywhere (For Now) ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Earlier this offseason, Ayo Dosunmu became the Chicago Bulls’ most talked-about trade chip.

Rumors swirled near the NBA Draft that the organization could look to part ways with the 25-year-old guard. While many believed that testing the market for Coby White could be the front office’s main priority, multiple reports implied that Dosunmu had become the primary talking point. This eventually led to news that the Los Angeles Lakers held preliminary talks about acquiring Dosunmu, among other players.

Nevertheless, the further we have gone into the offseason, the quieter the trade talk has become. K.C. Johnson of Chicago Sports Network has now reported that moving Dosunmu is not part of the plans. The full expectation is that he heads into October continuing to play a key piece in the Bulls’ rotation.

“I can tell you know that chatter has largely died for the most part … I do expect Ayo Dosunmu to be back in a Bulls uniform for next season,” Johnson said on CHSN’s The Fastbreak. “The Bulls did have substantive talks with a Western Conference playoff team earlier this offseason, well earlier, regarding Dosunmu. But the two teams could not find common ground on a trade package. All signs for now point to Ayo Dosunmu returning.”

I encourage you to watch the full episode of The Fastbreak on the CHSN YouTube page for K.C. Johnson’s full comments on Ayo Dosunmu’s status.

Ayo Dosunmu Likely to Remain in Chicago

To be clear, the idea that Ayo Dosunmu will begin next season with the Bulls should not come as a shock. The rumors were never juicy enough to suggest that a deal was close to the finish line. With that said, the Bulls do find themselves with quite the logjam in the backcourt. Dosunmu is expected to join Coby White, Tre Jones, and a re-signed Josh Giddey as a player deserving of meaningful minutes.

We also can not forget that Dosunmu is unlikely to sign an extension this offseason thanks to his extremely team-friendly $7.5 million deal. The guard knows that he can make a lot more money in unrestricted free agency next summer, particularly if he stays on the trajectory we saw before his injury last season. Dosunmu averaged a career-high in points, assists, and rebounds while playing 30+ minutes a night for the first time in his career.

Coby White finds himself in a very similar complicated situation. The Bulls are unable to extend him this summer due to the fact that he currently makes far below market value. This means he will also enter 2026 as an unrestricted free agent and have the option to leave Chicago for nothing in return. This is why the trade talk has been so prevalent. Especially with Josh Giddey projected to return as a foundational piece, it likely would not make sense from a team-building standpoint or a financial standpoint to have BOTH White and Dosunmu hang around long-term.

So while Johnson may be throwing some cold water on the recent trade buzz, this is not a situation we can stop monitoring. We can all understand why the Bulls would have an interest in keeping someone with Dosunmu’s transition scoring ability, perimeter defense skills, and relentless hustle. However, tough decisions have to be made all the time in the NBA, and Dosunmu will continue to be one of the front office’s best trade assets as we head into this season.
