Cubs Reportedly “Declining to Part With Moises Ballesteros” in Moves Contemplated Thus Far ...Middle East

There is one reading of this report that I’ll tell you straight up is not accurate: the Cubs do not take any prospects completely off the table in all potential deals.

So don’t read this that way:

The Cubs are actively trying to make moves, but sources say Chicago is declining to part with Moisés Ballesteros, who ranks as the club's No. 2 prospect per @MLBPipeline, who ranks him as the No. 47 prospect in its Top 100.

Instead, if you take it at face value, what Mark Feinsand is reporting is that trade partners have asked for Moises Ballesteros in trade, and the Cubs have declined to part with him IN THOSE PROPOSED DEALS.

In other words, Ballesteros is not untouchable, it’s just that no team has come to the table with a deal in which it makes sense for the Cubs to include Ballesteros. It’s probably not hard to guess what kind of deal that would be (think: controllable, impact starting pitcher).

Note that Ballesteros is not the only significant prospect the Cubs have who would fall into that tier. There’s Owen Caissie, Jaxon Wiggins, and Jefferson Rojas, at a minimum, and Kevin Alcantara will also have teams that like his upside. None of those prospects is completely untouchable. It’s just that the deal has to make sense, and it’s pretty easy to imagine teams coming to the Cubs with proposals – a rental starter? a non-impact reliever? – that simply do not make sense for including any of those guys, including Ballesteros.

Now, then. I have to mention the flip side of this, because of course it’s leverage season. It’s not impossible that the Cubs – or some other team – wants this out there in order to put pressure on a deal we’re not even aware of. These kinds of reports tend to be “true, but.” By that I mean, it’s all accurate, but there’s probably a reason it’s getting out now.
