Greeley resident Tiffany Simmons to run for mayor ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Tiffany Simmons hopes to become a new voice for Greeley residents as she throws her hat into the race for mayor.

As a lifelong Greeley resident, Simmons expressed her concerns over several actions the city has taken within the past year, including the handling of the Catalyst project. Believing that the city was disregarding the opinions of its residents, she decided to run for mayor.

The Catalyst project is a $1.1 billion development that will feature a new luxury hotel, water park, and a hockey arena, which is anticipated to be the new home for the Colorado Eagles. Simmons believes that while the city has made the materials regarding the project available to the public, the city has not been transparent enough.

“There is transparency in making sure that people know where to access that information, but also in making sure that publicly there is more of that that is available, that we’re not presenting it as just ‘this is the best thing,’ ” Simmons said.

Simmons has no political experience but believes her time as a teacher and therapist would bring something new to the office. She said this experience allows her to be open to different perspectives.

“I think I am more tapped into our community between teaching and my work as a therapist,” she said. “What I’m really good at is listening, having conversations, being challenged and challenging others, critical thinking and being able to see the bigger picture and the bigger impact and how things are received.”

When asked about her goals as the next mayor of Greeley, Simmons expressed a desire to focus on building a year-round homeless shelter. Additionally, she would like to see the city’s budget better allocated to support several projects across the city, rather than having city resources focused on a single project, such as Catalyst.

“I believe that I’m someone who is passionate, who’s dedicated to making Greeley better, that I bring something fresh and new and different,” Simmons said. “I recognize that I have a lot to learn, and I’m committed to learning that and allowing other people to help me to learn and to build that through being able to share their points of view, and to challenge mine.”

Friday was the last day for potential candidates to file with the city clerk, meaning that only Simmons and Councilman Dale Hall will run for mayor this November.

Election Day is Nov. 4.
