Fresh off of winning gold at the FIBA Under-19 World Cup this summer, Arizona basketball commit Koa Peat isn’t just earning national hype for his strong play but also praise from his future college head coach.

Arizona Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd led Peat and the USA FIBA U19 basketball team to the gold medal game, where they defeated Germany 109-76 on July 6. The USA U19 team was dominant all tournament, going 7-0 and scoring an average of 114.6 points.

Peat is a five-star recruit from Perry High School and the No. 1-ranked player from Arizona in the class of 2025. Peat will be heading to Tucson in the fall to play for Lloyd and the Wildcats, and he’s already made a strong impression with his head coach.

“Koa obviously is gonna play for us [Arizona] here and it was honestly my first time really being on the court with Koa,” Lloyd said on The Sideline with Andy Katz on Monday. “Obviously, we’d recruited him for a couple years, and he’s a guy in our backyard and Koa has the highest character imaginable for a young guy.”

Lloyd saw signs of Peat’s high character from the first FIBA U19 basketball tryout back in June.

Lloyd said that numerous attendants were at the tryouts, including players, coaches, training staff and the basketball selection committee.

After practice, Peat interrupted a full-team scrum to thank all the coaches for making the sacrifice of being at practice despite it being Father’s Day.

“I’m like, ‘Wow, who told him to say that?'” Lloyd said. “And I know nobody did because I’ve gotten to know Koa, but that’s his character, his care for others. It’s an awesome combination of a person with a huge heart and just great character, but a ferocious competitor on the court. I mean, he’s a warrior and a heat-seeking missile. This dude’s seeking contact, playing through contact and obviously we’re really excited to have him here at Arizona, but more importantly than that, I think he’s the first four-time gold medalist in FIBA basketball history, I think.”

Peat has won gold for USA at the U17 World Cups in 2022 and 2024, the U16 Americas Championship in 2023 and most recently at the 2025 U19 World Cup.

Peat played some of his best basketball for Team USA this summer, averaging 12.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in just 18.7 minutes played.

In the gold medal game, Peat was tied for the second most points scored for Team USA, putting up 12 points to go with nine rebounds.

Peat is part of an impressive incoming 2025 freshman class for Arizona and will be joined by five-star commit Brayden Burries, four-star commit Dwayne Aristode and three-star commit Bryce James.
