Lake Pillsbury: Our beautiful lake up on the mountain has been drained way down! Better bring a 4 wheel drive pickup to launch your boat. With the bad news out of the way… the good news is that the bass and trout fishing has been excellent. Many bass are being caught at what was, the Sunset Camp and the log jam area, Turtle Cove and Oak Flat. Also some nice trout are being caught during the morning hours trolling the west side of the lake. If you find a school of Squaw Fish you can easily hook into twenty to thirty of them. They are traveling together like a “wolf pack”. Don’t forget that these fish must be thrown up on the shore. Do not release them back in to the water. They are bad news to our salmon fisheries!
Clear Lake: The past week the topwater fishin’ has really picked up! Many anglers are hooking into 6 – 12 bass per outing, just on topwater alone. Fish the edges of the weed lines and tules. Some fishermen have also been having some luck throwing a frog and running it over the weed mats, pausing it over the openings. Early morning and late evening will be your best times to topwater fish. After the sun comes up, try fishin’ the docks, rock piles, and holes in the weed mats with a Senko, Brushhog, or Sweet Beaver.
Lake Mendocino Well with the cooler weather we’ve been having, the pressure has let up on our back yard lake. During the early morning and evening hours, you might find a few stripers that are on the surface feeding. Boy are they very skittish. Teresa and I threw everything at them and could not get any takers. Word is, the folks that are trolling for them (mostly kayakers) have been hooking into a few. The small and largemouth bass fishin’ has been good. Now with some vegetation growing up from the bottom, the drop shot setup has been working the best for us. We have the hook up about 24 inches depending on the height of the weeds. Most of the catchable fish are in 10 to 12 feet of water.
Also, got a report that some nice catfish are being hooked in Crappie Cove and the river channel. The hot bait has been live crawdads. Hope you all have a wonderful time enjoying our waterways.
Blue Lakes: Ahhhh, Blue Lakes, our summer time escape. This lake is a jewel, even though the trout fishin’ isn’t on fire like it was earlier, it is still pretty good. The gang that fish from the shore along Hwy. 20 have been catching their fair share of rainbows. By far, the early morning hours is the best time to fish. Using Powerbait has been the primary choice of most shoreline trout fishermen. The folks that have had the opportunity to get on the water with a put-put boat have been doing well trolling with an Action Disc or flasher trailing it with a worm or fly. I think the hidden treasure is the bass fishing. Even though the Upper Blue Lake is known for trout, the bass bite can be pretty good. Casting around docks and submersed timber with a Watermellon Candy Senko, Brushhog, or Sweet Beaver will get you hooked up.
Be safe-Be kind and watch out for the other guy.
