PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Town of Pittsford is dealing with a troubling situation as a man has been reported stalking and harassing women along the canal path and around Greater Embankment park.
“In recent weeks there has been a man harassing and stalking women who are walking or running along the canal path here in our park,” said Bill Smith, Town of Pittsford Supervisor. Smith urged women to stay alert, especially in areas like Greater Embankment Park, where reports have been increasing. News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spoke with residents about the situation.
Smith shared a specific incident where a woman was followed while riding her bike. “She became frightened, she got off her bike, ran to her car, locked the door, locked herself in, and he followed her all the way to the car,” said Smith.
Smith warned women to be vigilant while biking, fishing, or canoeing along the Erie Canal Trail. Residents Brooke and Paige Baiocchi expressed their concerns.
“Surprised,” said Paige Baiocchi. “Definitely afraid,” added Brooke Baiocchi. “We were just walking down the canal for the first time in a while and had no idea.” Brooke Baiocchi emphasized the secluded nature of the area. “I think walking together we typically try to do. I wouldn’t anticipate having a scenario like that happen along the canal in general,” she said.
After receiving several complaints, the Town of Pittsford issued a warning on social media. Smith said the issue began about two and a half weeks ago, prompting involvement from the sheriff’s office.
“They were up here and they were able to make an arrest, and unfortunately he was back at it again earlier this week,” said Smith. The man, whose identity has not been released, was issued a no-trespass order. If he violates it, he can be arrested. Smith urged the community to stay vigilant.
“If you see something, say something. I think that’s the most important thing,” said Smith. “We have a duty at town hall to do what we can to keep people safe.”
Brooke and Paige Baiocchi shared their plans to stay safe. “I think we are going to continue to walk in a pair, always being aware of our surroundings, not wearing headphones,” said Paige Baiocchi.
