I expected that this would be expected, but I still wanted to see some folks say it.
After the acquisition of Michael Soroka, the Chicago Cubs have at least buoyed their pitching depth – starting or bullpen – to some degree. But we know that’s not enough, and thankfully the reports are already coming out that the Cubs figure to do more.
From the group at The Athletic:
“Few contenders need starting pitching more than the Cubs. Since starter Jameson Taillon went down, Cubs manager Craig Counsell has gone with openers, using the recently DFA’d Chris Flexen and Ben Brown in his place. But the expectation is that this move is the first of a few pitching additions as the club looks to bolster both the rotation and the bullpen as they make a push for the playoffs ….
Soroka adds some depth, provides versatility and offers the potential for upside to the Cubs, who are expected to remain in the market for a front-line starter into tomorrow.”
Ideally, Soroka’s addition now provides the Cubs cover to be patient in their pursuits of impact relievers AND starters. No, you would not prefer that he winds up being your only addition to the staff, but at least you do have him in the door.
Here’s hoping the Cubs can make some strong moves from here. When we talk about “grading” a trade like the Michael Soroka deal, it really depends on the bigger Trade Deadline context. Is he added as a possible starter or possible reliever behind the impactful reliever and impactful starter the Cubs also added? Then this is a fantastic move. Is he the only addition? Well, then it’s pretty disappointing.
Thankfully, the “expectation” is that this will not be it on the pitching side for the Cubs.
