Going back to March, I don’t think you could’ve convinced me that Vidal Brujan would’ve made it on the big league roster through July. And then if you told me he was hitting .222/.234/.289/42 wRC+, I would’ve guessed that he didn’t make it through April.
It simply did not work out with the Cubs and Brujan, but circumstances kinda kept saving his roster spot until today. With the Trade Deadline looming, with Ian Happ’s bat missing, and with Miguel Amaya likely coming back in a few days or so and needing a roster spot, the Cubs decided today was the day to designate Brujan for assignment. They will have seven days to trade, waive, or release him.
Even though Ian Happ is thankfully not going on the IL after taking a foul ball to the shin, the Cubs knew they were going to be without his bat today in a critical game against the Brewers. So it makes sense that they would call Moises Ballesteros up and get him in the lineup today. But if they hope Happ can be back on Friday, it then in turn makes sense not to IL him – so you DFA Brujan instead, and then sort things back out on Friday after the Trade Deadline. That might change the roster a whole lot anyway (and you were likely to need additional 40-man spots, by the way).
So it’s a little convoluted, but it all makes sense. Ballesteros is up for a little while, Happ is resting for a little while, and Brujan is available for other teams to claim. Then you see where Happ is on Friday, where Amaya is on Friday, and where your roster is following the Trade Deadline. Sort the next bits out then.
That last bit in the headline there: Porter Hodge has been activated from the IL, but was optioned to Iowa. That means he was healthy, but the Cubs decided he still needed work at Triple-A before coming back up. Hopefully he gets right, because obviously he offers as much upside as anyone the Cubs might acquire today or tomorrow.
