A frightening scene unfolded at the popular Westfield Old Orchard Mall in Skokie Tuesday, with employees and shoppers barricading themselves in stores and stock rooms as police surrounded the parking lot of the mall and issued a lockdown.
The incident began around 2:30 p.m., when officers with the Skokie Police Department were called for reports of a person with a gun at the mall. The mall then went on temporary lockdown, a release release from Skokie police said, with authorities warning people to avoid the area and multiple police cars present.
According to an investigation, the incident stemmed from a dispute between two individuals, police said. Both individuals were located and detained as part of the investigation.
About 3:30 p.m., an “all-clear” was given after police confirmed that there was no further threat, and that no shots were fired as part of the incident.
The incident remains under investigation, with residents asked to call Skokie police at 847-982-5900 with any information.
The mall is expected to be open for regular hours beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to its website. At the time of publication, Westfield Old Orchard Mall had not responded to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
