2025 BNBlogathon Check-In: Hour 5 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I am currently blogging – here, on Facebook, on X (BN and my personal), and on Bluesky (BN and my personal) – for 40 hours straight, past MLB’s July 31 Trade Deadline until 9pm CT, thanks to your generous donations to Make-A-Wish. I’ll be doing recaps on the process throughout the day(s), but you’ll also see normal posting (Bullets, news, Pre-Gamin’, EBS, etc.), as well as a significant uptick in rumor/trade posts.

News and Rumors Since the Last Check-In:

It’s the first check-in, but we’ve started the day with discussion of Ian Happ’s shin and the likely Moises Ballesteros promotion, the Astros throwing a wrench into the third base market, and a broad overview of the Cubs’ trade situation.

Most Interesting Tidbit Since the Last Recap:

There is no last recap yet, but I think it is interesting to ponder the Trade Deadline impact of this series against the Brewers. For me, even if the Cubs get swept today, it changes nothing about what they should or should not do by tomorrow – they’d be, at most, 3.0 games back of the best record in the NL. I get that others might disagree, though.

Current Thoughts About the Chicago Cubs’ Trade Deadline Strategy/Execution:

They have to, you know, do stuff. The bare minimums: AT LEAST one quality starting pitcher. AT LEAST one later-inning reliever. AT LEAST one bat that improves the bench mix. Again, those are just the minimums.

What I’d actually like to see is a front-three starting pitcher, and maybe even a second guy for more innings/depth/protection from there. I’d like to see a truly impactful late-inning reliever, and, again, maybe even a second guy for depth. At third, well, I want Eugenio Suarez if he’s healthy. I wouldn’t be mad about Willi Castro, though. Either way, the Cubs do need to make a move to improve the bench, either by way of moving Matt Shaw there because of an addition, or by a direct addition.

Current Tiredness Level:

I think mostly just the normal amount of morning tiredness. I got decent sleep last night for the first time in like four Blogathons. It’s always choppy the night before because my body keeps kicking me awake in a panic about not getting enough sleep (which, it’s like, body … dude … that’s literally the thing I’m trying to do right now while you’re kicking me awake!).

The good news is that I got up and going an hour earlier than planned, so, hey, that means I get to finish up an hour earlier than I’d previously been expecting! Only 35 hours to go …

Current Beverage/Stimulant of Choice:

I have learned over the years that I have to be much more judicious about doling out caffeine throughout these two days. Some years, I’ve gone way too hard way too early, and it makes the overnight period extra miserable from the constant crashes.

So, this morning, I started my day with a glass of water and a leftover donut from Do-Rite.

… but yeah, I’m gonna be off to go get coffee soon.

Current Emotional Status:

Very positive. People were very kind about the award I got from Make-A-Wish, and more importantly, it just means all the more support for a great cause.

The 15th annual #BNBlogathon kicks off tomorrow morning! Teeing that up and offering some thanks: pic.twitter.com/IUbCRK0g37

Random Thought Passing Through My Mind:

I did a test and I’ve got live streams ready to go on X this year. I think it’ll actually work this time.

More Blogathon Miscellany:

LET’S GO!!!! Look forward to this every year, especially when the Cubs are in the thick of a playoff race!! Have a great #BNBlogathon

#BNBlogathon: 2 of the most fun days of the baseball season. If you're a Cubs fan and not following @BleacherNation, you're missing out! Will the Cubs land a frontline starting pitcher? Will they get a 3rd baseman/bat? Bullpen help? Will Brett lose his mind? All of the above?

I actually got decent sleep last night, so not sure why I look like I’m on hour 38 of the #BNBlogathon rather than hour 2. pic.twitter.com/syBm5pOvU2
