Several rounds of heavy downpours and storms were in the Chicago forecast Wednesday, with severe weather possible and as much as three or four inches of rain for some parts.
Ahead of the wet weather, the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for all of northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana. Set to go into effect at 1 p.m., the flood watch will last through Thursday morning as showers are expected to continue overnight.
“Several rounds of locally heavy rainfall from thunderstorms are expected today through Thursday morning,” the NWS said. “Each round may produce 1 to 2 inches of rainfall, though locally higher amounts are possible.”
As of 5:30 a.m., radar showed heavy rain, storms and lightning traveling across Iowa and into central and western Illinois. By around 1 p.m., rain was expected to reach the Chicago area, with heavy downpours expected, the NBC 5 Storm Team said.
Some of the storms moving in may be severe, the NWS warned, putting the entire Chicago area under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five. In addition to localized flash flooding, the strongest storms could produce torrential downpours and damaging wind gusts up to 60 miles-per-hour.
“Periods of rain are possible tonight,” the NWS added, as widespread rain was expected to continue through midnight and linger through the mid-morning hours Thursday.
Temperatures Wednesday will be a wide range, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alicia Roman said, with highs in the 70s to the north and 80s to the south. A major cool down comes Thursday and Friday, with temperatures dropping into the 70s for most areas and even cooler readings along the lake.
Dangerous swimming conditions for southern Lake Michigan beaches will also develop Wednesday, the NWS said, with high waves, hazardous boating conditions and life threatening currents lasting through Friday.
Temperatures through the weekend will be in the upper 70s and low 80s, Roman said, with temperatures back up into the mid 80s next week.
