Rangers beat Panathinaikos 2-0 in the first leg of this Champions League qualifying second-round tie, but the job is not done yet. Still, Russell Martin’s men head to Greece as clear favourites to reach the next round.
Will Rangers get the job done at the Athens Olympic Stadium, or could there be a sting in the tail on Wednesday?

Panathinaikos vs Rangers predictions
Rangers are in pole position to progress from this Champions League second-round qualifier, but it would be a mistake to take anything for granted.
In Russell Martin’s first competitive game at the helm last week, Rangers ran out 2-0 winners at Ibrox thanks to goals from Findlay Curtis and Djeidi Gassama.
It was not entirely plain sailing for Rangers, though. Panathinaikos were the better team in the first half and they would have gone into the interval ahead were it not for some big saves from Jack Butland.
The Greek outfit were made to pay for their profligacy in the second half, as Curtis and Gassama found the back of the net to give Rangers an important win.
It was an even match overall, however, and Panathinaikos showed enough to suggest this tie is far from over.
Rangers are still a work in progress as Martin continues to get his ideas across to the squad. In an ideal world, the Gers would only be playing friendlies in July ahead of the 2025/26 kick-off. Instead, they have to negotiate competitive fixtures like this one while a new manager attempts to put his stamp on the team he inherited.
It is a difficult balancing act, but with the Scottish Premiership due to start this weekend, Rangers are in decent physical shape. The question now is whether they will be able to see this tie out.
An unwillingness to adopt pragmatic tactics was Martin’s undoing at Southampton. He continued to try and play possession-based, front-footed football even when the situation did not call for it.
Rangers fans will hope that Martin has learned from his shortcomings at St Mary’s, because it would surely be foolish to try and dominate from the get-go in Athens. Rangers will need to bide their time and ensure they make life difficult for their hosts.
Martin will also want to see a sharper showing from his team after criticising the way they started the first leg.
“The first half was a bit frustrating because we’re playing a good team,” he said after the 2-0 victory in Glasgow. “They’re athletic, they pressed really aggressively, but a lot of the moments that were uncomfortable for us were down to a lack of intensity on our part.
“It can’t be a problem for us that, whenever you step on the pitch for this club and this team, you have to be all in – you have to be.”

Panathinaikos and Rangers are ready to go head-to-head with the Scottish side protecting a 2-0 lead.
Panathinaikos to win
Panathinaikos finished second in the Greek Super League in 2024/25, a season which was overshadowed by the tragic death of their defender George Baldock.
The former Champions League finalists (they finished as runners-up to Ajax in 1971) are now hoping to reach the competition proper for the first time since 2010/11.
Panathinaikos have plenty of work to do, but they created chances at Ibrox and they will carry even more of a threat in front of their own fans.
Rangers have a two-goal cushion which should allow them to progress to the third qualifying round, but they will be put through their paces on Wednesday.
Panathinaikos are likely to win this game, although that will not necessarily be enough to go through.

Over 2.5 goals
Panathinaikos need to score at least twice to keep their hopes of progression alive, but that does not necessarily mean they will go hell for leather from minute one.
The Greek club will need to strike the right balance as they aim to get back in the tie while also being wary of Rangers’ ability on the counter-attack.
Rangers, for their part, will need to try and push Panathinaikos back instead of simply sitting deep and inviting their opponents onto them.
That is unlikely given that Martin is the type of coach who prefers to play proactively, but that sort of approach brings its own risks.
All things considered, we should see a fair few goals in this one.

Filip Ðjuričić to score any time
Panathinaikos will hope that the aforementioned Butland is not in quite as good form on Wednesday as he was in the first leg.
At the same time, the Greek side must be more clinical when they are able to fashion opportunities to find the net.
Filip Ðjuričić is one Panathinaikos player who is capable of converting when he gets the chance to do so.
The odds on the attacking midfielder scoring in the second leg are very attractive given the quality he possesses.
