The streets of Downtown Chula Vista will be bursting with citrusy charm as the 28th Annual Lemon Festival returns on Saturday, Aug. 16, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The long-running tradition celebrates the city’s zesty past—back when Chula Vista was once known as the “Lemon Capital of the World”—with a day full of lemon-themed fun, food, and family-friendly entertainment.

Each year, thousands of residents and visitors turn out to enjoy the festival’s unique blend of history and community spirit. This year promises even more excitement with the debut of two new contests: the Lemon Pie Eating Contest at 2 p.m. on the Zesty Stage and the Best Dressed of the Lemon Fest Contest at 3:30 p.m. on the Juicy Stage. Contestants are encouraged to register online in advance to secure a spot.

Live entertainment will fill two main stages throughout the day, while a brand-new dance performance stage on F Street, sponsored by Seven Mile Casino, adds even more rhythm to the celebration. Families can head to Memorial Park for the Little Lemons area, offering interactive activities and games just for kids. And of course, the festival wouldn’t be complete without a visit from Tarty the Lemon, the beloved mascot, making his return for meet-and-greets and photo ops.

Local food vendors will offer a variety of lemon-inspired treats, from pastries and ice cream to drinks and snacks. Participating vendors include Il Cannoli Bar, Lemon Drop Pastry Shop, It’s in the Filling, and Mariposa Ice Cream, among others. Artisan booths will line the streets with handmade goods and keepsakes from local businesses like The Little Lemon Stand, Julian Naturals, Chula Vista Living, The Movement Brand, South Bay Historical Society, and Steven A. Wood Photography.

The festival will also feature a hands-on science display from presenting sponsor San Diego Community Power, located at Madrona Street and Third Avenue. The interactive exhibit will show how lemon-powered circuits can generate electricity, combining education and fun in one energetic corner of the event.

Whether you’re there to sample lemon-flavored sweets, browse handcrafted goods, enjoy live music, or dress up in your finest lemon-inspired outfit, the Lemon Festival offers something for everyone. As organizers like to say, “Squeeze the day”—it’s going to be a peel of a time.
