It’s not an Obsessive Watch if you don’t have multiple posts a day on the topic …
A small but notable update on the possibility of a Eugenio Suarez trade while we await more information on the state of his hand after the hit-by-pitch (X-rays were negative, he’s sitting tonight, and that’s all we know). We’ve heard about the steep price the Diamondbacks were asking for Suarez, the best bat on the market, if they were going to trade him early. And now there’s a little more info on that.
When the Diamondbacks and Mariners initially engaged on Suarez – I presume this was before/during the time they were getting together on the Josh Naylor trade last week – the asking price on Suarez was ENORMOUS. Doesn’t sound like it’s come down yet. From Mariners.com:
“Seattle has eight prospects within MLB Pipeline’s Top 100, positioning the club to conceivably make any deal it wants, and word is that Arizona is asking for multiple among that group for Suárez. The Mariners must also weigh 50-ish games of Suárez — who is a free agent at season’s end — or any rental, and the potential of six years of service time from each of their prospects before reaching free agency should they pan out in the Majors.”
It’s important to remember that there hasn’t been a then-current top-100 prospect traded for a rental in years and years and years. It just doesn’t happen. And the DBacks have been asking for at least TWO of them?! If that report is accurate, then it is a completely unserious ask that is going to have to come dramatically down – especially after the HBP – if a trade is going to happen.
Suarez, 34, is having a career year for the DBacks, hitting .248/.321/.577/143 wRC+ with 36 homers in 105 games. Five or six teams would seriously love to add him, Cubs included. But no organization is going to give up the kind of package you’d associate with a controllable impact player for two months of Eugenio Suarez. Again, especially after his health was put into question by the HBP.
