Excel Aquatics’ Frederic Burks stole the spotlight at the 2025 Southeastern Summer LC Championships in Huntsville, Alabama, after laying down impressive performances in the boys’ 100 and 200 breast.
The 13-year-old went a personal best of 1:07.89 in the boys’ 13-14 100 breast, taking first over Anderson Attmore of Ensworth Aquatics, who clocked 1:08.03 to take 2nd. Burk’s time makes him the 18th fastest 13-14 year old boy in the 100 breast this year. The breaststroke remained quick in the boys’ 15-16 age group, where Excel Aquatic’s Gavin Fu won the 100 breast over Auburn Aquatic’s Remington Angerer, clocking 1:06.64 over Angerer’s 1:06.87.
Burks also took first in the boys’ 13-14 50 breast and 200 breast, achieving personal bests in both events. He took the 50 breast in 32.50, finishing just ahead of Samuel Woodard (32.75) and Samuel Stern (32.93). His 200 breast, however, was his most impressive of the meet. He cranked out a time of 2:26.61, clocking a personal best and becoming the 11th fastest performer in the boys’ 13-14 age group this year.
Julia Muse, who swam unattached, also propelled herself up the age group rankings. She won the girls’ 13-14 50 breast with a time of 33.66, a huge personal best that makes her the 9th fastest 13-14 year old girl in the 50 breast this year. TNT Swimming’s Ava Lowrance, 14, finished right behind Muse, clocking 33.76 and becoming the 11th fastest 13-14 year old girl this year in the event.
Muse also placed third in the girls’ 13-14 100 breast, clocking a personal best of 1:15.99.
Memphis Thunder’s Ian Call blasted the fastest boys’ 200 breast time of the meet, winning both the boys’ 15-16 and open categories in 2:19.10, a time good enough to make the cut for the upcoming Junior National Championships in Irvine. Call also took first in the boys’ 15-16 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 52.15, and second in the boys’ 15-16 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 24.19.
Coast Aquatic’s Brenden Hamel, 14, had a sensational meet, sweeping the boys’ 13-14 butterfly events. He took first in the 50 with a time of 26.63, won the 100 in 57.84, and completed the trifecta by going 2:11.61 in the 200. With those personal bests he is now ranked 22nd in the boys’ 13-14 age group this year in the 50 fly, 11th in the 100 fly, and 25th in the 200 fly.
Memphis Thunder’s Roos Rottink, who is committed to swim at the University of Virginia in the class of 2030, won all of her individual events. She took the girls’ 17-18 50 free in a personal best of 26.42, and won the girls’ 17-18 50 back and 200 back in 29.19 and 2:14.43, respectively, though she added time in both events.
Indiana University commit and Memphis Thunder swimmer Eva Rottink had a strong meet as well. The twin sister of Roos Rottink took second in the girls’ 17-18 200 back in 2:17.09 and the girls’ 17-18 50 back in 29.25. While she didn’t manage a best time in either of those events, she did drop a personal best while leading off the girls’ open 400 medley relay, clocking 1:01.99 in the 100 back leg and leading the Memphis Thunder B team to victory.
Eva Rottink also swam a personal best in the prelims of the girls’ 100 fly, a time of 1:02.35, but did not swim the event in finals.
