Elite Afghan soldiers trained by MI6 face ‘savage’ Taliban attacks after data leak ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

It is feared that the identity of individuals in the elite Triples units was revealed after a list containing the personal information of thousands of Afghans applying to move to Britain was accidentally leaked, making them targets for the Taliban.

One military source told The i Paper: “If they are exposed, the whole integrity of UK intelligence capability is exposed along with them.”

The Triples – referring to the Commando Force 333 and the Afghan Territorial Force 444 – were vital to Special Forces operations in Afghanistan to counter the terrorism threat in the aftermath of 9/11, during their 20-year operation in the country.

The risk to commandos and their families of retaliation at the hands of the Taliban dramatically increased after the data breach in February 2021, which emerged earlier this month after the High Court ruling lifted a super-injunction banning the leak from being made public.

A former UK military source, who helped train both Triples units before working on a Government scheme to resettle them in the UK, said the data breach has “significantly increased the risk of direct or indirect retribution” to those who worked closely with UK forces.

They added: “They should have been the first out the door (when the Taliban took over the country).”

Despite risking their lives alongside British forces, more than 2,000 commandos had their UK resettlement applications, under the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP), rejected.

A UK intelligence source who also helped train both Triples units said the soldiers should have been extracted alongside the British Special Forces they helped back in August 2021, as “they were essentially British troops, just wearing different uniforms.”

Why Triples’ resettlement bids were rejected

Former veterans minister Johnny Mercer has said that he has seen evidence that five former Triples had been killed by the Taliban after their resettlement applications were rejected.

The Triples – who fought alongside the SAS and SBS Special Forces – could be potential witnesses to war crimes and would be “legally compelled” to provide potentially damaging witness testimony in the inquiry if they were in the UK, the UK intelligence source said.

“We encourage all those with relevant information to come forward,” they said.Earlier this year, the High Court found that Triples’ resettlement application rejections were the result of “defective decision-making” by MoD caseworkers, who failed to properly assess their eligibility for resettlement.

As a result, Triples’ commandos and their families were effectively invisible to officials tasked with determining their fates.

The MoD said 30 per cent of those rejected decisions have been overturned, which shows the “commitment to Afghans who served with UK forces”.

‘Savage’ retribution threat

He told The i Paper the resettlement scheme set up after the leak sends a “strong yet bittersweet message” to would-be foreign MI6 recruits in the future.

An MoD spokesperson added: “The Triples review remains an absolute priority, and we are committed to delivering on our pledge to relocate eligible Afghans and their families through our resettlement schemes.”
