Benches clear again as Machado hit by pitch, but Padres emerge with victory ...Middle East

News by : (Times of San Diego) -

The benches cleared again when the Padres took on the Cardinals Saturday, but this time the Friars came away with the win.

Manny Machado and St. Louis’ Willson Contreras each were plunked twice as things got heated between the teams for the second straight night.

Saturday’s incident came in the ninth inning of the Padres’ 3-1 victory as Machado complained after he was hit by a pitch from Andre Granillo. Cardinals coach Jon Jay, a one-time Padre, exchanged words with Machado and was ejected.

Machado could be seen raising two fingers and telling an umpire, “That’s two,” while he waited to take his base. He remained angry and the benches cleared, but no punches were thrown.

Contreras was hit by Robert Suarez’ pitch in the bottom of the inning, to bring the tying run to the plate. But the closer retired Nolan Arenado and then drew a grounder from Masyn Winn for a force at second to end the game.

The chippiness had began anew in the bottom of the fourth when a pitch from starter Randy Vásquez hit Contreras on the wrist.

The Cardinals’ first baseman already had been hit by a pitch from Nick Pivetta a night earlier, causing the first benches-clearing incident of the four-game series (the Padres dropped the first two games, including Friday’s shutout).

Though Vasquez appeared to apologize later, retaliation was swift. When the Padres batted in the fifth, Machado led off, and Kyle Leahy’s first pitch hit him, prompting the umpires to issue warnings to both teams.

Machado said he “kinda knew” the first one was coming and accepted it. The second, though, left him frustrated.

“I wasn’t happy with the whole situation, he said. “Don’t come out there and start yapping your mouth,” he said of Jay.

Machado wasn’t the first Padre to be hit on the night. That honor went to Jake Cronenworth, who came around to score, thanks to a St. Louis miscue. With two outs in the second, Bryce Johnson singled, but centerfielder Victor Scott II bobbled the ball, allowing Cronenworth to make it all the way home from first base.

St. Louis tied it up in their half of the second, but the Padres went ahead in the fourth, again thanks to Cronenworth, who doubled, and Johnson. After Cronenworth moved to third on a ground out by Jose Iglesias, Johnson’s squeeze brought him in for a 2-1 lead.

Before the drama in the top of the ninth, Fernando Tatis Jr. gave the Padres an insurance run when his grounder drove in Johnson, who had hit a ground-rule double and advanced to third on a sacrifice.

Vásquez and four relievers gave up just three hits to the Cardinals, with Jason Adam and Suarez surrendered no hits in one inning of work each. Jeremiah Estrada was credited with the win, to improve to 4-4. Suarez logged his Major League-leading 30th save.
