Growing up in the Midwest, grape soda (or “pop” as we like to call it) is one of those childhood flavors that reminds me of summer barbecues and family get-togethers. If I were lucky, grape soda was available as a fountain drink option at my favorite local burger spot. As a grown-up, the nostalgia still kicks in every time I crack open a can of grape soda. These days, the soda aisles are filled with the standard lemon-lime, orange and cola flavors, but grape is still relatively rare. In my Chicagoland area, grape soda isn't particularly common, so it’s like a treat whether you’re an adult or a kid. Once you crack open a bottle or can (and it has to be ice cold to capture the grape essence), you remember how good it is. My nostalgia got me thinking that it would be fun to see what grape soda brands are still out there. After some nosing around, I tracked down six of the most popular brands and decided to taste test them to find the best grape soda. The contenders included standard grape soda, plus grape-flavored prebiotic and probiotic sodas. I've done quite a few soda taste tests for Parade, so I was feeling confident that I could easily pick the winner immediately, but I was surprised by how close this contest was.Nonetheless, this was a fun taste test, and now we have a winner that we can confidently buy the next time we’re in the pop (err, soda) aisle. Are you feeling adventurous and interested in trying something new? Or maybe you’re already a grape soda fan and want to see where your favorite brand landed in my list. Read on for the ranking of these sodas, ranked worst to best, so you know what to grab at the store—and what to skip.Related: We Tried 14 Different Orange Sodas and You Can Buy the Winner at Walmart?? How I Tested These Grape Sodas
I didn’t realize how difficult grape soda was to locate in my Chicagoland area, but I did manage to find most of the contenders at my local Albertsons, Walmart and Dollar Tree. Thankfully, the folks at Fanta were kind enough to send me samples to include in this taste test. With myself, my husband, son and daughter gathered around our coffee table, we laid out the six brands and some plastic cups. We poured a generous sample of each brand in a cup and judged them one at a time. For us, a good grape soda should have a respectable level of carbonation (but not be so fizzy that it's overpowering), a robust grape flavor and a balanced sweetness. 6. Poppi Grape Soda
Courtesy Kellye Fox
Poppi started off strong, literally. Once we cracked the can, there was an impressive fizz and a strong grape smell. The issue we had was the inconsistent grape flavor. It faded quickly, then it was replaced with an unknown flavor that reminded my daughter of root beer, which isn't what we were looking for. Looking at Poppi Grape’s ingredient list, cassava root fiber was listed along with grape juice, apple cider vinegar, apple juice and a fruit and vegetable juice. It’s likely that this combination contributed to why this one ranked last and didn’t present a consistent grape taste. 5. Olipop Classic Grape Soda

Like Poppi, Olipop is a prebiotic soda, so it’s not going to have as much sugar as traditional soda (and that’s ok). Still, Olipop’s grape version was really delicious, and the concord grape juice really delivered a fruity punch. The carbonation level was decent, and the color was a lighter purple (which isn’t a bad thing, just an observation). Our only gripe was that it had somewhat of a watered-down grape taste, so it fell to number five on the list.Related: We Tried 9 Prebiotic & Probiotic Sodas and You Can Buy Our Top Pick at Costco
4. Faygo Grape Soda

Faygo’s sodas are commonly found in Dollar Tree, making them a very affordable choice if you’re craving a soft drink. For my daughter, Faygo grape soda tasted like a grape fruit snack, meaning that it was very sweet. This brand’s grape flavor was stronger than Olipop, but it had little carbonation. Overall, this brand wasn't our favorite because we thought it tasted a bit artificial.
3. Sunkist Grape Soda

Sunkist is a well-known soft drink brand, but their grape interpretation missed the mark a bit. The carbonation level was pretty low and while the flavor was pleasant, it was still missing a complete grape punch, which is how it landed at number three.Related: Cream of the Crop: The 10 Best Cream Soda Brands Ranked
2. Fanta Grape Soda

At this point in the taste test, things were starting to get scrutinized heavily. Fanta Grape stood out because it had that rich purple color that you’d expect from a grape soda, and the smell was simply intoxicating. According to my kids, this brand smelled like grape candy. The carbonation level was similar to Sunkist, but Fanta’s version was bolder and grape-ier (if that’s a word). In the final calculation, there was only a 1/2 point difference between Fanta and the winner, and it came down to taste. Related: Smooth and Spicy, These Are the 10 Best Ginger Ale Brands, Ranked
