CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Vicki Foster, a woman who broke barriers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, has died, a source confirmed.

Sources told Queen City News that Foster had been dealing with an illness. 

She rose through the ranks of CMPD, becoming assistant chief in 2017 under Chief Kerr Putney, and the highest ranking woman in the department's history.

Vicki Foster spoke with Queen City News on security following the deadly New Orleans attack in January 2025.

She also was a big supporter of the CMPD Toy Drive, of which QCN is a longtime sponsor.

Foster retired from CMPD in 2020. 

Current Chief Johnny Jennings offered his condolences Friday night on X:

"Retired Assistant Chief Vicki Foster was a dear friend and it was an honor for me to know her for the past 30 years. I was saddened and hurt by the news of her passing today and will pray for her family during this time. She will truly be missed."

The UNC Charlotte grad then did consulting work and worked real estate. 

In a 2019 interview with Charlotte Magazine, Foster said she orginally planned on becoming a psychiatrist before getting into criminal justice. 

Funeral arraignments are pending as of Friday night.
