The Joliet Police Department is warning residents of scam phone calls from individuals posing as police department employees.
In a Facebook post, police reported that residents have received phone calls from people asking for money to resolve legal issues, claiming to be from the Joliet Police Department.
“Simply put, these are scams and spoofing calls,” the post reads.
Spoofing allows callers to disguise their identity by falsifying the information displayed on the caller ID, allowing scammers to appear to call from a local or trusted phone number, according to the department.
“Our department will NEVER call you and ask for money,” the post continued. “Additionally, ANY callers from any company or organization requesting to be paid in gift cards or through stand-alone money apps are likely scams as well!”
