Day 2 takeaways as Cardinals training camp ends on somber note ...Middle East

GLENDALE — One of the most unfortunate parts of the game, injuries and football go hand in hand.

Just two days into Arizona Cardinals training camp — well before pads even come on — those in attendance for the open practice got a reminder of just that.

During 7-on-7 work, rookie safety Kitan Crawford and veteran linebacker J.J. Russell unintentionally collided midplay.

Crawford was quick to bounce back up. Russell, however, stayed down before being placed in a stretcher and carted off. The entire team rallied around the linebacker before he was taken off the field.

Practice was abruptly stopped as State Farm Stadium went silent. In inside linebacker Mack Wilson’s eyes, that was the only move to make given the circumstances.

According to the team, Russell was taken to the hospital where he was being evaluated for neck and head injuries. He’s since been released from the hospital and is back with the team. Great news after a chilling end to practice.

“You never want to see that.”

“You never want to see that. It sucks. Hopefully everything’s OK,” Calais Campbell said after practice. “We’ll see as the process goes through. We’ll see how everything works out but I was happy to see him move around and stuff. It sucks, but it’s one of those things that happens in football.”

Cardinals rookies getting first-team reps early on at training camp

It didn’t take long for rookies Will Johnson and Cody Simon to find themselves running with the 1s this camp.

There was a trio of Cardinals cornerbacks rotating in for the majority of first-team snaps, with Johnson, Max Melton and Starling Thomas V.

Simon, meanwhile, split starter reps opposite Wilson with Akeem Davis-Gaither and Owen Pappoe.

Given what each of Johnson and Simon can bring to the table, this is just the beginning for the rookies eyeing a climb up the depth chart.

Cardinals first-team offense a work in progress

Disclaimer: It’s early. And as J.J. Watt said Thursday, take training camp stats with grain of salt.

But the main takeaway from the first-team offense on Thursday was simple; there’s plenty to clean up.

Whether it be during 11-on-11 or 7-on-7 work, incompletions and a botched snap summarized the offense’s day.

Two of the bright spots were tight end Trey McBride and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., both of which look more in tune with Murray as the unit works the kinks out.

Starling Thomas V with the play of Day 2

Speaking of Thomas, the veteran cornerback turned in the top defensive play of the afternoon with a long pass breakup during first-team 11-on-11s.

Come for the play, stay for the celebration.

The cornerback is very much in the conversation to command a starting role in a tightly contested competition that includes Melton and Johnson.

Day 2 or not, anything helps this time of year.

Odds and ends

– On top of Russell’s injury, cornerback Jaden Davis was seen walking off the field with a trainer. It was unclear what happened to the defensive back.

– Jon Gaines II got second-team center looks on Thursday. When healthy, he can serve as a valuable depth piece across the interior offensive line.
