ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Edison Estremera-Cohen was arraigned this morning in Monroe County Court, facing charges of second-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, robbery, and criminal possession of a weapon.
Police said Estremera-Cohen shot and killed David Vazquez on Oscar Street June 22. Later that day, officers attempted to arrest him on North Clinton Avenue. Estremera-Cohen ran from the officers and fired at them, police said. Officers returned fire, wounding him.
At the arraignment, Estremera-Cohen pleaded not guilty. The judge ordered that he be held without bail until his next court date on September 26.
The courtroom was packed with dozens of officers, many of whom showed up off the clock to support their fellow officers. Estremera-Cohen entered the room with his head down and an interpreter by his side. He did not make eye contact with anyone and looked at the floor as the charges were read.
“Our officers are out there trying to bring calmness and sanity and safety back to a neighborhood,” said Rochester Police Public Information Officer Greg Bello. “We can’t do this alone. It takes our community and those who are going to attack us, they’re going to be held accountable for their actions.”
Locust Club Treasurer Sergeant Kevin Leckinger said, “We try to have at least one, if not more of the elected officers here on our executive board members. But as you saw on there today, there were, I don’t know, dozens, you know, maybe nearing triple digits of Locust Club members here in uniform to support their brother officer.”
Police mentioned a new bill under review by the governor that could grant New York State Police increased paid leave after troopers kill or seriously injure someone on duty. They wondered if the governor would consider extending this paid leave offer to other agencies, including the Rochester Police Department.
