ALBANY, N.Y. – A Chinese national living in Albany was accused of scamming a Wyoming County couple out of $20,000.
Investigators said he obtained the cash from an elderly couple in the town of Java through a computer scam. The couple said they clicked a link that locked their computer and instructed them to call “Microsoft Security.”
The Wyoming County Sheriff’s Office said Rihui Yan was behind the scam. The couple was told to withdraw money from their bank and put it in an envelope. An Asian man then came and picked it up.
Investigators said Yan ran a similar scam in Franklin County, N.Y. He is now in federal custody.
