Mike Inez, who has been the bassist in Alice in Chains for the last 20 years, took to Instagram late on July 22 to give a tribute to his former boss and the man who changed his career by hiring him as the bass player in his solo band.
“Thank you Ozzy. I loved every second I spent with you since 1990. We sure laughed about a lot of things. I’ll never not miss you. Glad we got to make some noise together one last time. Thank you for a wonderful life. #ozzyosbourne,” he wrote, along with a photo from the July 5 “Back to the Beginning” concert, showing Inez on bass as Osbourne sings from his throne.
Inez, who grew up in the San Fernando Valley, played in Osbourne’s band from 1990 through 1993 after auditioning along with more than 50 other musicians to play bass for the heavy metal legend. He went on to have stints with Alice in Chains (1993-2002), Wylde’s Black Label Society (2001-2004), Heart (2002-2006), and a second stint with the reunited Alice in Chains beginning in 2005.
Inez’s followers on Instagram, including some fellow noted musicians, commented on his post.
“It was heartwarming to see you be the bassist for Ozzy's last solo performance. Felt like a No More Tears reunion. RIP to Ozzy and Randy Castillo ❤️❤️❤️ (and Rhoads too!),” one fan wrote.
“We love you, Mike! Rest in peace Ozzy!!!!?,” another fan wrote.
